Introduction to the Collaboration

Hot Wheels® and Aston Martin joined forces not too long ago unveiling the Aston Martin DB4GT “High-Speed Edition” die-cast. This model reimagines the classic DB4GT as a land speed record challenger, combining the iconic design of the DB4GT with performance elements inspired by salt flat racers. The die-cast will be available globally in October 2024.

Design and Development Process

The collaboration involved Aston Martin designers Miles Nurnberger and Thomas Gilbert, alongside Hot Wheels Design Manager Craig Callum. Their vision was to adapt the classic DB4GT into a car built for speed on dry lake beds and salt flats. The transformation includes several modifications aimed at enhancing aerodynamics: a longer body, a lowered roof, an aggressive front splitter, and custom wheels. These changes were made to reduce wind resistance, paying homage to the purpose-built performance of historic land speed racers.

Design Inspiration: A Historical Nod to Bonneville

Thomas Gilbert’s design concept drew inspiration from the land speed record cars that compete annually on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Interestingly, historical research revealed that a DB4GT owner in the 1960s took his car to Bonneville, driving it in the speed trials—an event that cemented the “Bonneville” theme as a key aspect of the die-cast’s design. The motorsport-inspired livery further connects the car to the world of land speed racing.

A Unique Take on a Classic Car

Craig Callum commented on the unique nature of this project: “The juxtaposition between the sophistication of Aston Martin’s original design and the outlandish land speed cars results in an extraordinary die-cast, even by Hot Wheels standards.” The designers emphasised that this model merges Aston Martin’s luxury heritage with the creativity and flair that Hot Wheels is known for, creating a collector's item for fans of both brands.
